Screw-in ground anchors

Auger stakes use a screw-thread design rather than a driven point — also referred to in the UK as corkscrew pegs or screw-in anchors. The stake is rotated into the ground, with the helical thread displacing and compressing soil as it goes. Once fully seated, the thread provides mechanical grip — holding power that comes from the thread's engagement with the surrounding soil rather than from embedment depth alone.
The auger approach is particularly suited to soft, sandy, or waterlogged ground conditions where driven stakes pull out under load because the soil around them fails to provide adequate resistance. Where a 60″ Tiger Stake is approaching the limit of what a driven solution can provide, an auger stake is often the next step. It is also the appropriate solution where ground conditions prevent driving — very soft turf, sports pitches, or ground where driven anchors cause unacceptable surface damage.
- Screw-in design — mechanical thread engagement with surrounding soil
- Holding power from thread grip, not embedment depth alone
- Suited to soft, sandy, waterlogged, and loose ground
- Alternative to driven stakes where ground conditions prevent effective driving
- High alloy steel — Hogan manufacturing specification
- Sizes and specifications to be confirmed — contact us for timeline
Ground Conditions Where Driven Stakes Reach Their Limit
Driven stakes rely on the soil around the shaft providing resistance to pull-out — friction along the shaft, lateral resistance at the point, and bearing capacity of the soil beneath. In soft, sandy, or waterlogged ground, this resistance falls off significantly. Even a 60″ Tiger Stake in saturated ground may not meet the required holding force for a high-load anchor position.
An auger stake's thread engages the soil mechanically rather than relying on friction alone. This changes the failure mode — the stake can only pull out if the thread can pull through the soil column above it, which requires significantly more force in most conditions. It also means the holding capacity is more predictable and less sensitive to ground saturation.
Auger stakes can also be installed where driving would cause damage — sports pitches, fine turf, historic sites, or any surface where a hammer and breaker are not appropriate. If you are working in conditions where this is a regular issue, get in touch to discuss timeline and specification.
